Sad sack — неудачник, человек не вписавшийся в коллектив. Никакого сочувствия к невыспавшимся это армейское выражение не содержит (армия - не то место). Да и вообще переводится оно так: мешок с дерьмом. Ближайший синоним в американском английском - schlemazel, то есть, по нашему - шмазь.
